My first piece for big band, COOKIN’, was long overdue. As a horn player, I successfully avoided jazz for many years. Thankfully, with the help of my big band director, Albert Alva, we were able to come up with something I’m happy with. The sax chorale at the beginning foreshadows what is to come much later. That melody doesn’t make its full reappearance until the very end when the whole band is playing together. That convergence of all the sections of the band is my favorite moment of the tune.
